Awad + Koontz Architects Builders was incorporated in 1997, but the story begins several years earlier…
Jim and Ali were neighbors and good friends. Jim worked for a large corporation, but was not inspired. He left and went to work for a custom homebuilder. After a couple years, he gained some confidence and found he really was inspired to go to work everyday. People respected him and started to respond to his work ethic and knowledge of his craft. So Jim started his own custom construction and remodeling business in 1994.
At the same time, Ali was working in an institutional architectural firm and moonlighting as a residential architect. He discovered a love for renovating and restoring older homes, even designing new homes. In this sweet spot of residential design, he felt most at-home. Then Ali and his wife Debbie, along with Jim and his wife, Polly, started what was to be the first of many evenings walking their dogs and talking about houses. Over the course of years of conversations about Ali and Jim’s shared passion – houses – they embarked on their first project.
Ali designed a project for Jim. Then he designed a few more. Clients were happy. More clients wanted what the Ali and Jim team had to offer: an architect builder collaboration. Genius! … and mutually beneficial as well as efficient for everyone involved. Then, as new clients came through the door, Jim got so busy that he needed a partner. And the rest is history.
